Absence Management is one of the most complex Oracle HCM modules. This is the guide I wish I had on my first implementation.
Setup Sequence (Don't Deviate) 1. Define Absence Types 2. Configure Accrual Plans (if applicable) 3. Build Qualification Plans 4. Define Entitlement Plans 5. Create Absence Plans 6. Assign to Eligibility Profiles 7. Associate with Payroll Elements
Absence Types — Key Decision Points **Accrual vs Non-Accrual**: Does the balance build over time, or is it a flat entitlement?
For most annual leave: Accrual For sick leave in many regions: Non-accrual (fixed entitlement)
Accrual Plan Configuration ``` Accrual Plan > Accrual Rules: - Frequency: Per Pay Period / Monthly / Annual - Rate: Fixed or Formula-based - Ceiling: Maximum balance cap - Carryover: Whether unused balance carries to next year ```
Common Pitfalls 1. **Not validating against legislative rules** — check local labor law before configuring caps 2. **Missing negative balance rules** — define what happens when an employee takes more than accrued 3. **Forgetting payroll element links** — absence plans must connect to payroll for deductions to work 4. **Testing only happy paths** — test termination scenarios, LOA scenarios, and retroactive corrections
